Easter Baskets, Bunnies, Candy, Decorated Eggs, Easter Egg Hunts and Easter Blessings – April is upon us! Happy Easter – Happy Spring! May each of you be blessed this Easter Season!
When I reflect on my blessings, many things come to mind. And when I reflect on the blessings of the community, many things come to mind. One of them is Treasure Valley Community College. I have said many times, and will continue to say, Treasure Valley Community College is one of our community’s greatest assets. TVCC has made a difference in so many people’s lives in the Treasure Valley!
Business leaders, residents and students gathered to attend a public Town Hall on March 16th at Four Rivers Cultural Center conducted by Les Zaitz, Malheur Enterprise, to discuss the future of Treasure Valley Community College. The focus of the Town Hall was to hear comments about how the college can better service the students, the community, business and industry. Board Chair, Mark Wettstein opened with the history of the college, followed by Kevin Kimball explaining the finances, Christina Trunnell spoke about the programs for students, and Michelle McKay discussed the current makeup and trends of the enrollment. Students shared how they felt about the college and the community. Their experience at TVCC is extremely positive, however, the lack of activities outside of the college is an issue, student housing is very difficult to find, and the lack of community support at sporting events is disappointing. From business leaders and residents, it is well understood how vital the college is to the community. The impact TVCC has had on generations of families attending college was heard, many praised SBDC, the value of the college is certainly felt in the community. Three topics that came up – Marketing, Website and Signage! As of this date, these items are being addressed and we can look forward to positive results from this Town Hall!
The college will also work with students and community members on how to build stronger bonds and connectivity between students and the community!
I feel very fortunate to be a Board Member of the TVCC Foundation, I have served 2 terms as Chairman and currently serve as Secretary. I am proud to say Dr. Gus Tanaka and I had a lunch meeting with Cathy Yasuda, which resulted in her acceptance of the position of Executive Director of the Foundation! Cathy is a real and true blessing to the Foundation and to Treasure Valley Community College. I would like to share some of the accomplishments of the TVCC Foundation for the 2016 year:
- *Sponsored $8,000.00 in scholarships for area fundraisers
- *Provided financial assistance to TVCC Science students (Gale Draper and Natalie Nelson) to present their poster at the NW Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society I Anchorage, Alaska.
- *Raised $93,163.00 for the Support a Chukar at the 2016 Scholarship Gala
